He was German and she was Polish. The Russian/German war had brought them together then Stalin's Iron Curtain threatened to keep them apart. Through love, courage, and perseverance, they were able to reunite and follow a dream.
Leaving behind a nation broken by war, they journeyed to America with their young son to begin anew. However, even in the land of opportunity, the family would soon learn that life in their unconventional little neighborhood would become a challenge. War, romance, harrowing escapes, murder, and a group of zany characters fill the pages of this true story. It will make you cry and make you laugh. It’s an unconventional look at a controversial time.

My Village In The City How a Family Survived World War II then Came to America in Search of a Dream eBook Ed Schwall

Lovely book and reminder to most of us that either we or our families migrated to the United States of America seeking the dignity to live in peace and get a second chance striving to live in prosperity in a chaotic world and times and what survives for ever is the good will and memories which we should cherish to create and keep. I will be looking forward for another memoir from ED.

My Village In The City How a Family Survived World War II then Came to America in Search of a Dream eBook Ed Schwall Reviews

Met the author at a book-signing in Michigan (I was a featured author that day too), and when my illustrator pointed out that his book was about WWII, I just had to have a copy. Having a father who was a WWII veteran, knew I had to read the story. Kept my interest throughout. Personal accounts are always the best, and this was no exception.
I've read this book twice! Shed tears twice! I thought I wouldn't enjoy this book as much because I heard some of the stories from my husband. Wrong! I picked the book up and read the whole book before stopping. The story of how people could find each other with so much against them, then survive a war and then the struggle in carving out a life in America, was so heart wrenching. I felt like I knew Ed's family like my own by the time I finished the book. I highly recommend this book. It would make a good gift for someone in your life that reads.
This guy can really write a terrific story, even though it's a real story about his parents and their journey to America and finding a niche in Detroit.
I can see this book being made into a movie for HBO or on the big screen. It has all the requirements. Love, War background, and the grit to make a life in Detroit with all the different people and craziness of a neighborhood. Ed Schwall is a lovely storyteller, I can't wait to see what he
writes next.
This is a book I could not stop reading. It is a story of war as well a story of a family looking for a better life. As my father was a prisoner of war I found the stories of World War II, as told by the authors parents, to be very powerful in regards to the heartache of war. The stories of growing up in the old neighborhood and going back was what I really could relate to. The description of the neighborhood made you feel like you were back in time reliving your own childhood. I enjoyed the book so much as it was a fast read, informative, and a story of sharing years of growing up in a city. Definitely a must read book !!
My wife and I both have read My Village and enjoyed it immensely. The story takes you to the town of Dearborn, Mi. where the writer grew up as a young boy after his parents immigrated there from Germany and Poland. The book retells the hardships of his Mother and Father during the 2nd World War, how they met, how they survived the Nazi invasions and how the father barely survived battles he was forced to fight in.
First hand personal history not found in your school history books. An easy and interesting book to read say the least. My wife and I fought over who would get to finish it first.
Just finished MyVillage in the City, how I loved this book , and not because I'm from the Detroit area. This is a truly touching story of our greatest generation. This is one I will read again.
I enjoyed reading this book. It's a relatable page turner. I found myself while reading, drifting to thoughts of my childhood and the neighborhood I grew up in. This book will cause you to dwell on priceless thoughts and feelings. Well worth the short time it took to read it.
Lovely book and reminder to most of us that either we or our families migrated to the United States of America seeking the dignity to live in peace and get a second chance striving to live in prosperity in a chaotic world and times and what survives for ever is the good will and memories which we should cherish to create and keep.
